AMSA needs to maintain its place as an active and vocal member of international and regional organisations such as the International Federation of Medical Students Associations (IFMSA) and the Asian Medical Students Association (AsMSA). These are excellent opportunities for students to experience various aspects of global health and next year, with the IFMSA March General Assembly and regional meeting close by in Thailand, Australian delegates are well placed to attend in unprecedented numbers.

The current economic climate highlights the need for responsible and prudent financial management like never before. It has also demonstrated AMSA’s need to plan and prepare for the long-term rather than only looking ahead to the next executive handover. At the ripe old age of 50, AMSA Council has finally left behind those awkward years of adolescence and matured into the premiere forum for medical students across the country to discuss and debate their issues. However, given how much it has grown and changed, Council isn’t as efficient as it once was, and must adapt to meet a new set of challenges. Through our extensive experience in AMSA Council, we have built a plan of reform that will keep both the executive and Council dynamic, productive and accountable.

One of AMSA’s most successful initiatives in the past five years has been the creation of the Global Health Network, and the formation of Global Health Groups at every medical school. The GHGs and GHN represent how shared passions and interests of medical students, linked into a national framework, can lead to a highly successful initiative that benefits all AMSA members.
